Must Read Books : Recommended by BHS Students and Staff

Looking for a "good" read. Winter vacation is coming; let's create a "non-required" reading list for students and staff. Submit one or two of your favorite past or current reads and why you think others might enjoy it.

Thank you for helping to take readers "between the lines."

The winter usually brings frigid weather, and people would usually like to remain warm. A heart warming read would seem suitable for reading this winter vacation. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is an excellent book about viewing the world through the eyes of a child.

While I like to read historical fiction, I usually don’t read books related to the 12th century, the days of crusades, and King Richard the Lionhearted. However, I enjoyed my journey back in time when I listened to the audio book Green Jasper: Book Two of the De Granville Trilogy, by K.M. Grant. This is a story about love, friendship, and the courage of one horse that ultimately brings two enemies together to fight for a common cause. Upon finishing, I went back to read the first book Blood Red Horse: Book One of the De Granville Trilogy. (In retrospect it is best if they are read in order:-)) So, if you are interested in knights, fair maidens, and “just causes” read or listen to these books over winter vacation.

The book, My Sister's Keeper, was a great read. A combination of family dynamics, court scenes, and moral/medical dilemnas makes this a 'hard to put down' page turner. The ending is a stunner-an ending I never ever would have expected! You'll have to read it to know what I'm, talking about. Enjoy!

Anything with the words "Neil Gaiman" is gold. All of his books are smart, funny well written, massively entertaining, and insightful. Try "American Gods", "Anansi Boys", "The Sandman" series, or "Stardust". All are great reads.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

The book Twilight is an amazing love story between a seventeen year old girl named Isabelle Swan (Bella for short) and a one hundred- year- old- plus vampire named Edward Bella.
Bella had been living with her mother in Phoenix, Arizona but decided to go live with her father in Forks, Washington. As she gets settled in her new home, she learns of the strange family called the Cullens.
Dr. Cullen worked in the local hospital and lived in Forks with his wife and four adopted teenagers.
One day on her way to school, she nearly gets run over by a van in the school parking lot. All of a sudden she sees Edward - but as a blur. He had (according to Bella) lifted the van off her. But when she confronted Edward about what happened he said that we had simply pulled her out of the way.
When she goes on a hiking trip with some friends in La Plulsh, she meets the son of a friend on the Indian Reservation. Jacob tells her stories about his people. One legend tells that his people were descendents of wolves. Another legend was about the “cold ones”.
The “cold ones” did not hunt the way the rest of their kind did. They preyed on animals instead to a make sure there would not be trouble. Jacob’s great grandfather made a truce with them. The “cold ones” were not to go onto their lands and the Indians would not expose them to the settlers.
As Edward and Bella begin to hang out more and more, Edward reveals his secrets to Bella. Before, she knows it she is on the run from a vampire with intent on killing her because she has sweet smelling blood.
This story is perfect for those who have dreamed of true love and vampires.
